Built as a farm house in the 19th Century, Camphinie was restored in 2007 and is now fully equipped and furnished with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The house is partially excavated into the hillside and has three levels with stairwells in between.
The house was restored by the well-known South African designer James Mudge in collaboration with the owners, David and Paula Reid and local artisans. Every effort was made to retain the original aesthetic and unique features of the farmhouse, while introducing tasteful, contemporary elements.
Materials such as local oak and dressed stone are used in the structure of the house with wooden dormers and windows sourced from antique sales and brocantes in the region. The major installations such as masonry, carpentry, electrics and plumbing were done using the exceptional skills of local artisans who were sympathetic to the original design of the house. An interior designer by trade, Paula Reid has furnished each room in her signature style that combines traditional and contemporary design, while prioritizing comfort. Whenever possible, the Reid’s and their extended family spend their holidays maintaining the house (with breaks for fresh baguette, chévre and rosé).
Elevated, with a South-West orientation Camphinie has wonderful views over the surrounding woodland, meadows and valleys. The Reid’s recommend a sunny breakfast with pastries from the local Boulangerie on the front terrace, with afternoon and evening meals spent overlooking the valley on the back terrace.
Camphinie offers a tranquil and beautiful retreat to visitors, with sporting, cultural and historical activities easily accessible. The house is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining and the abundance of fresh produce available at markets nearby makes it an ideal base for anyone who takes pleasure in cooking and eating!
